A Tale of Two Georges

On the eve of the sixth anniversary of the criminal invasion of Iraq, the Government of Canada allowed unindicted, international war criminal number one, George W Bush, into the country to make some "ridiculous money" at a $400 per plate Calgary luncheon, sponsored by law firm Bennett Jones.

Condoleeza Rice, another Bush cabinet official with gold plated war crimes credentials, is scheduled to speak at the University of Calgary on May 13.

But when British anti-war MP George Galloway attempted to finalize travel plans for a March 30th, Toronto speaking engagement on 'Resisting War from Gaza to Kandahar', he was barred on national security grounds.

Mr Galloway called the decision "idiotic". "British media reported the decision was due to his views on Afghanistan and the presence of Canadian troops there."

There can be no confusion about what is being demonstrated here. The war criminal friends of the accomplice regime in Ottawa are welcome, despite the law barring them. The anti-war champions of the people will be barred by the same gatekeepers, on the grounds of "national security".

Whose security? Whose nation? Clearly the fascist warmongers of gangster government believe that the Canadian people will not rise to defend what is right and just. It takes the brave actions of those like Galloway, or Indigenous activist Splitting the Sky's attempted citizen's arrest of Bush, to remind us that we needn't simply swallow whatever outrages power decides to jam down our throats. It is high time to gather around our champions and defend them. The fascists' wars are not just fought against those in other lands, they are fought against us here at home as well. The surest way to lose one is not to know you're in one.

Demand and defend the peoples' right to hear their own. Demand and defend the peoples' right to bar the door or prosecute war criminals like Bush and Rice. Wake up, wise up, speak up, rise up.
