GUTS Protest Against Police Sexual Assault
When: 9:00PM Friday, April 7
Where: Meet at City Hall, corner of Carden St. and
Wyndham St., downtown
What: Festively Militant Night March
Why: In response to the Guelph Police sexually assaulting a GUTS member
On Friday April 7th, at 9:00pm, GUTS will be holding a festively militant night march. On March 8, 2006 a GUTS member attended a protest at the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal and was sexually assaulted by Officer B. Welsh, Badge #107. He held her against a wall, thrust his pelvis into her bum, and asked her "how do you like that?" The police subsequently acted to intimidate her prior to her release.
We demanded that the Guelph Police and Officer B. Welsh make a public apology to Ms. Freeborn, GUTS, and the public at large.
We demanded that Officer B. Welsh be fired immediately.
We demanded that all charges and tickets relating to March 8, 2006 at the OHRT be dropped immediately.
NONE OF THESE DEMANDS HAVE BEEN MET!
Despite the calls, faxes, and emails by so many concerned people, the Guelph Police have failed to take any meaningful steps to resolve the situation. This is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
GUTS has been contacted by people who have taken autonomous direct actions in solidarity. We greatly appreciate the support and the quick response (editor's note: we would be happy to post any details about any of these autonomous direct actions, providing that doing so does not put anybody at risk).
We are asking people to bring noisemakers and drums. See you in the streets,
Guelph Union of Tenants and Supporters
