As of yesterday, December 11, 2009, FAU Berlin (FAU-B) has essentially been banned as a union. The decision was made by the Berlin Regional Court (Landgericht Berlin) without a hearing. FAU-B was not even informed that the Neue Babylon GmbH – which is involved in a labor dispute with FAU-B – had started legal proceedings against them. The court’s decision goes beyond merely taking away FAU-B’s rights as a union within the Babylon cinema. From this point on they are no longer allowed to call themselves a union!

The accusation by various German mass media and mainstream politicians against me of being “anti-Semitic” for the reason that I spoke out against war crimes and oppression of the Palestinians by the Israeli government and army and supported the BDS campaign hit me very hard. For forty years now I am a socialist and internationalist, fighting hand in hand with so many people for social justice, peace, radical democracy, sustainable development and all forms of racism.

In many towns and villages, especially in eastern Germany, many local governments and judges either sympathize with or fear the Nazis, who call these areas "liberated zones". A few show more courage, together with church and union groups. But when young antifascists actively defy the many...[marches] of the [far right] [National Democratic Party]...every weekend in city after city all over Germany, they often find themselves being apprehended and arrested, while the Nazis get police protection.

Today the EU/ASEM summit began. At the place I was staying at there was an anxious excitement present in everybody. We all made our way down to the meeting point near the St. Pauli subway station. After a few police instigated stalls we were on our way. I was with a few dozen familiar faces, all wearing black. Most of them had water proof jackets and pants for the water cannons. As we marched I looked forward and backward and saw that I was in the middle of a giant black bloc.
