March 15 has been a day of international action against police brutality around the globe since 1997. The specific date is significant because in Switzerland, on March 15, two children, ages 11 and 12, were beaten by police. M15 originated from the Black Flag group in Switzerland and from the Collective Opposed to Police Brutality in Montreal. People in countries across the world come out to the streets in March to express their rage against the police. In Montreal specifically, there has been fierce annual riots erupting from the depths of the dispossessed. This March 15, we encourage everyone to join the rest of the world in the streets, the timing couldn't be more appropriate.

On March 15 NYC Direct Action will be having a mass direct action against one group of individuals that think is okay to stop and frisk all young black and Latino people, that is okay to spy on Muslims, and think it okay to kill young innocent people for no reason at all which includes getting away with murder, homicide and genocide.... That's right we're going to be having a mass direct action against Police Brutality and the NYPD.

Police brutality is not just a matter of rogue individuals. It is systemic, and inherent to the institution itself. Consider a brief snapshot of the past year in New York: On September 7, 2012 20 Year Old Reynaldo Cuevas was working at a grocery store where a robbery was taking place... Reynaldo runs out of the store believing that he was running into the hands of safety, but instead he gets murder by police officer Ramysh Bangali from the PSA7 precinct who fail to follow protocol and disregarded hostage procedures. On February 2, 2012 18 Year Old Ramarley Graham was murder by police officer Richard Haste inside the bathroom of his Bronx home in front of his grandmother and 6 year old brother Last time, he left the courthouse with a smile on his face and with other cops cheering around him.

WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH.

These instances are not exceptions to the rule, but the necessarily violent norm of policing. The excuse of ‘a few bad apples’ is a myth; the tree is rotten- the institution of policing is itself the problem. Police systematically use, and grossly abuse the power at their disposal to criminalize, and otherwise brutalize queer and trans peoples, communities living in poverty, activists, indigenous and black and Latino communities, those without status, people living with disabilities, drug users, and those living with mental health issues. Under the ruse of ‘to serve and protect’ the police operate as a tool of social control - they are armed thugs that patrol our neighborhoods and streets to enforce an oppressive social order based upon exclusion, violence and mass exploitation. The interests they serve are those of the powerful; the protection they offer is the protection of an unjust status quo.

Fuck that. Fuck the police. Fuck the role they undertake within our society, and fuck the social order they violently uphold. The police do not protect us. On the contrary, we must organize our communities to protect ourselves from the police. We are heartbroken at the misery they cause poor people and their families, and furious when we bear witness to their sickening impunity. We will not sit by, and allow this to go on unchallenged. We do not accept the state’s, and by extension the police’s claim to a monopoly on the ‘legitimate’ use of violence. We WILL fight back.
