[Vancouver] Merry May Day Social!

Cost:
Free

This Friday, May 1st, come celebrate International Workers Day!

May 1st is a day of celebration which crosses cultures and spans history. But its truly historic relevance is the commemoration held on this day by the international labour movement of the victorious struggle for the 8 hour day. A benchmark victory for the working class, the 8 hour day signaled a victory won at the expense of much blood, and many tears.

In the midst of what is perhaps the gravest economic crisis ever known in the history of Capitalism the traditions of the labour movement are in dire need of renewal. Capitalism has been around for less than 200 years, and yet it has created the most frightful devastation ever known in the history of humanity. As Karl Marx pointed out, the viability of any society is proven by its ability to develop the productive forces. The history of capitalism shows, the only way it can continue to develop the productive forces in the face of its periodic economic crisis is to destroy the productive forces themselves. No longer progressive, Capitalism in its senile years is propelling us down a ruinous path. But this need not be so.

The international working class, working people, organized and unorganized are the key to a new, and prosperous future. It is literally in our hands. In a celebration of life itself the working class has the ability to transform this situation, and put an end to the frightful misery, and the blind alley into which capitalism takes us.

Workers; men and women of all colours, cultures, nationalities, abilities and identities. Workers are those who must work for a wage. We are the future and it is the struggles we have fought, won, and also lost which prepare us for this time of struggle. It is our time to reclaim the history taken from us by the bosses, by those who want to bury the history of the organized workers who have stood, fought back, and demanded something better.

Come, join together and celebrate the history and traditions of the international working class.
