Update on Hyatt Workers By Jones ---- On August 31st of 2009, Hyatt hotels in Boston fired
98 employees in the housekeeping department. Upon termination, bosses gave workers
“Severance Package” of two weeks pay plus one week’s pay for the first five years an
employee worked with Hyatt. On the way out the door they asked them to hand in their
nametags.

Does the system we live under, capitalism, offer enough scope for achieving lasting
solutions to all the problems it causes? Of course, some improvements are made and some
problems are alleviated. Yet new kinds of problem also arise in a society which is
changing rapidly, constantly seeking new ways to make a profit.

Black Cat Publishers has just finished publishing a book I wrote called "Yardbird Blues;
25 Years of a Wobbly in the Maritime Industry". The term "Yardbird" is an old term that
longshore workers and ship's crews used for those that came on to the ships to repair
them.
