**Day of the Dead altar**

Join us at Rhizome Café to find out more about the struggle of the Zapatista women in Chiapas, Mexico. Before the Zapatistas rose up on January 1st, 1994, the Zaapatista women (including Comandanta Ramona) had already begun their struggle within the movement to ensure that women's demands were included within the Revolutionary Laws. These laws included some laws specific to the needs of women in the grassroots indigenous communities from which the EZLN garners its support, membership, leadership, as well as powerful spirit of resistance and dignity.

The evening will include short report backs from previous Zapatista gatherings in 2006 and 2007. The rest of the evening will be open to a larger discussion and exchange of experiences, knowledges, stories about the Zapatista women and communities. The hope is that women and others present can exchange knowledge/experiences with others who would like to know more. There are some women who are going to the Zapatista Women's Gathering in December of this year, and others who would love to, but will not be able to. Perhaps those who can go can carry with them some of the desires and dreams of those who cannot go. Maybe you have a question, a curiosity about something, or you want someone to take a photo, bring back a paliacate, or tell you what they experienced on liberated Zapatista territory. This is a chance for people who are interested in the struggle of the Zapatista women and in the struggle for dignity in general to get to know each other and talk. And have some fun! After the short report backs and larger discussion, we hope to ease into a more laid back evening with music and informal talk among those who want to keep talking about a world where many worlds fit.

Our hope is to have another gathering in February 2008 after the Zapatista Women's Gathering (to take place Dec. 28-31, 2007). We hope to have it at Rhizome again so we can once again share this experience of a Zapatista gathering.

There will also be Zapatista stuff available for purchase, wonderfully rich and rebellious Café Ramona (coffee straight from the liberated Zapatista territory) as well as beautifully hand-woven and loomed blouses and other creations--all made by the Zapatista women themselves.

Since it is the Day of the Dead, we invite you to bring a small gift to put at an altar for our dead. Our idea is to create an altar together to commemorate and celebrate those who are no longer with us. Flowers, candles, fruits, bread, or any contribution is welcome for our altar. As each person arrives, please put your gift at the altar. We hope to see you on the 1st.

Los invitamos a convivir con nosotros en el Café Rhizome para aprender y compartir sobre la lucha de las mujeres zapatistas en Chiapas, México. Antes de que los Zapatistas se levantaran el 1 de enero de 1994, las mujeres zapatistas (incluyendo a la Comandanta Ramona) ya habían empezado su lucha dentro del movimiento para asegurar que las demandas de las mujeres fueran incluidas dentro
de Las Leyes Revolucionarias. Estas leyes incluyen algunas leyes específicas a las necesidades de las mujeres de las comunidades indígenas de base, donde el EZLN tiene su sostén, militancia, liderazgos, así como un espíritu poderoso de resistencia y dignidad.
Incluiremoss algunos informes cortos de los últimos encuentros zapatistas en el 2006 y 2007. Posteriormente abriremos un espacio de discusión e intercamm bio de experiencias, conocimientos y cuentos sobre las mujeres y comunidades zapatistas. Esperamos que las mujeres y otros presentes puedan intercambiar conocimiento/ experiencias con otros que quieren saber más. Algunas de las mujeres presentes en esta reunión podrán asistir al encuentro de mujeres zapatistas en diciembre de este año; pero otras mujeres, a quienes les encantaría ir, no podrán hacerlo. Tal vez aquell as que puedan ir puedan también llevarse con ellas algunos de los deseos y sueños de las que no podrán hacerlo. Tal vez tengas una pregunta, una curiosidad sobre algo, o quieras que alguien tome una foto, te traiga un paliacate, o te diga lo que vivió allá en territorio liberado zapatista. Es una oportunidad para que la gente que está interesada en la lucha de las mujeres zapatistas, y en la lucha por la dignidad en general, se conozca y hable. ¡Y para que nos divirtamos! Después de los breves informes y la discusión de grupo, esperamos seguirla con unaa
noche relajada, con música, comida y plática entre quienes quieren seguir platicando y soñando con un mundo en donde quepan muchos mundos..

Nuestro deseo es tener otro convivio en febrero de 2008, después del Encuentro de Mujeres Zapatistas (que tendrá lugar del 28 al 31
de diciembre, 2007). Esperamos poder reunirnos otra vez en el Café Rhizome para compartir la experiencia de este encuentro zapatista.

Habrá productos zapatistas en venta, como el maravilloso y rebelde Café Ramona (café directo del territorio zapatista liberado), así como blusas y otras creaciones en tela, bordadas a mano por las compañeras zapatistas.

Y, como es el Día de los Muertos, los invitamos a traer un pequeño regalo para colocar en un altar de muertos. Nuestra intención es crear el altar entre tod@s para conmemorar y celebrar a loss que no están con nosotros. Se aceptan flores, veladoras, frutas, pan, calaveritas, o toda contribución para adornar nuestro altar. Conforme cada persona vaya llegando puede pasar a colocar su regalo. L@s esperamos.
