“There is a group called City Life/Vida Urbana. They are an anti-foreclosure group in Boston. They have an incredible success rate. They have staged more than 30 foreclosure blockades. They have been successful at almost every single one of them.”

Last Saturday, the government delegate in Catalonia of Spain’s Popular Party (PP) government...handed a diploma of honour to a representative of the Brotherhood of Combatants of the Blue Division...The Blue Division was a unit of Spanish volunteers that served in the German Army on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. The Brotherhood is composed of veterans of the unit, family members and revisionist historians involved in a project to rehabilitate the fascist regime of General Francisco Franco.
Abusing Prisoners Decreases Public Safety: An Interview with Educator, Author and Former Prisoner Shawn Griffith
This new book’s thoughtful analysis and chilling reflections on what author Shawn Griffith experienced while incarcerated is a remarkable illustration of why the US public must listen to the voices of current and former prisoners who have stories that only they can tell. Griffith writes that “by integrating my own personal experiences with statistics and examples from different corrections systems around the nation, I am attempting to discredit the general perception that the system is designed to enforce and protect justice for everyone."

Living standards for indigenous people on par with "third world" countries, buttressed by a large population of unemployed young men in a "warrior cohort", and easy-to-target economic infrastructure, all mean Canada has conditions for a potential indigenous "insurgency"...That's according to a new report penned by a former Canadian military officer for the MacDonald Laurier Institute, a think-tank supported by corporate executives.
The vast majority of Muslims condemn terrorism because even classical Islamic law explicitly classifies hirabah (terrorism) as a serious sin. In fact, indiscriminate killing and attacks are prohibited. Indeed, the Qur’an (6:151) proclaims: “Anyone who kills a person (except pursuant to law) it is as if he has killed the whole of humanity.”

Simply put, the Darrell Dexter [New Democratic Party] government needs to lose in the upcoming provincial election. It has abandoned the progressive and social justice values of the NDP. The Dexter government has placed the interests of the corporate elite and the 1% ahead of the people it claims to represent, making life much more difficult for them.
Syria is Washington's war. It was planned years ago. It began in early 2011. No end of conflict looks near. Escalating it appears likely. Israel's very much involved. It abhors peace and stability. Its history reflects belligerence. It’s a direct threat. It borders Syria.
A certain idiot rear-guard action is being proffered by foot-draggers who see in natural gas and fracking oil deposits a new Jerusalem. Writing in Smart Money, a stepchild of the Wall Street Journal, Reshma Kapadia makes the case that “enormous new oil and gas discoveries under American soil are having a game-changing impact on the entire economy.” He’s no doubt dead right. Dead, right? We can indeed be fossil-fuel dependent. All we have to do is give up our water-and-environmental dependency.
It's the most fundamental right. Without it all others are endangered. Obama's waging war to destroy it. He's done so throughout his tenure.
A Toronto drug dealer is asking for C$200,000 (£130,000) for the full tape and the US website Gawker is currently approaching $100,000 in its online attempt to raise the money to get its hands on it, which I think we can all agree is the kind of thing democracy and online fund-raising sites were invented for.

Israeli and Syrian forces exchanged fire across the cease-fire line in the Golan Heights yesterday, amid rising US and Israeli threats of intervention in the US-led sectarian proxy war in Syria, which is rapidly spreading throughout the region...The border fighting came only two days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to act “with determination” to prevent the transfer of arms from Syria to the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah.
We who live in countries that support NATO, that tolerate this occupation, bear responsibility to hear the tales told by Afghans who are trapped by our war of choice. These tales are part of our history now, and this history isn’t popular in Afghanistan.
It's no surprise. Michael Parenti calls America's High Court its "autocratic branch." It's notoriously pro-business. It's longstanding.
History reinventors support despots. Social democrats are vilified. Crimes of war, against humanity and genocide are sanitized. They're whitewashed. They disappear in plain sight.
"These kinds of informants and undercover police represent a real threat to activists, in no small part because they're committed to manufacturing crime where none exists to terrorize the public and justify their abuses of our right to dissent...This Chicago cop's infiltration of our group raises real questions about police intrusion into protesters' medical histories - and it's a truly despicable example of exploiting people's caregivers as part of the national campaign to criminalize dissent."
