Inviting Anarchy Into My Home

On Aug. 1, 2002, I left behind the comfortably roomy semicircle marked "married-couple household" on the Census Bureau pie chart and slipped into an inconspicuous wedge labeled "two or more people, nonfamily." Having separated from my husband of 28 years the day before, I opened our three-bedroom 1927 Colonial Revival house to a group of men and women less than half my age. Overnight, the home I had lived in for 12 years became a seven-person anarchist collective, run by consensus and fueled by punk music, curse-studded conversation and food scavenged from Dumpsters.

South Korean Farmers Under Siege by Korean Troops!

On March 6th, 2006, South Korean military riot police began an attack on the autonomous village of Daechuri. For over four years, Daechuri and the nearby community of Doduri have defiantly resisted the siezure of their homes and fields for the expansion of an United States Army base. Barracaded inside the elementary school, rice farmers, elderly residents, and peace activists are holding out against sporadic, sometimes intense attacks by Korea's elite military police force. International support is needed to pressure the Korean government to halt its brutal assault.

Anarchist Orientalism and the Muslim Community in Britain

I once came across a white anarchist who was extremely ignorant with regards to his perceptions of Muslims. What was disturbing was the fact that he was attacking not only Islam, with the primitive and simplistic knowledge he had of the religion, but also Muslims in general, namely their culture, way of life, beliefs and showed a complete conviction in the media and right wing stereotypes.

Token Street Protests

Street protest is a really huge subject, but I am pretty clear why I feel that a lot of street protest is not worth the time. Protest needs some kind of anti-authoritarianism in it or it really falls pretty flat. The more I watched the “peace” community co-opt itself with police to “self-police” protests and how people have been willing to basically walk along a route police pre-approved, and to agitate in *no* way whatsoever…well, it seemed a waste of my time after a while. It seemed like a mock protest after all the watering down.
