Our imperial elites...simply cannot bear to have American power and domination resisted in any way, at any time, for any reason, anywhere, by anyone. It offends their imperial dignity. It undermines their extremely fragile, frightened, frantic egos, which can only be held together by melding themselves to an image of monstrous, implacable, unstoppable power.

Colonial regimes atomized or perverted local social institutions...They decimated social capital and uprooted local institutions that might have provided the basis for evolution of a more liberal society...[A]n authoritarian state led to the corruption and atrophy of civil society...The bipolar superpower dynamic also contributed to greater political authoritarianism in much of the post-colonial Third World. Left-wing nationalist regimes...adopted garrison state cultures and developed closer ties with the Soviet bloc.

Those on the left...who have been...sympathetic to the Gaddafi and Assad regimes, seeing them as a progressive bulwark against Western imperialism, may be consistent opponents of the U.S.-led 'war on terror,' but they don't understand the immensely positive and liberating role of the Arab revolutions...There are others on the left who have it the other way around...[T]hey underestimate the capacity of Western intervention to play an important role in the region...They fail to fully locate developments inside Syria in a larger political context.

What exactly is the Western Saviour Complex? If I had to come up with a definition for an encyclopedia...the line would go something like this: the Western Saviour Complex is a deeply embedded notion that any problem in any part of the world can, or even must be solved by Western countries. Historical examples include Columbus bringing Christianity to the "Indians" and America bringing "democracy" to Iraq.

Vicious fanatics are trying to kill us and destroy our country. They’re blowing up our soldiers overseas. They’ve infiltrated our country. We must defend ourselves against these mad-dog berserkers before it’s too late...This litany has been repeated by corporate-controlled media and politicians for years now, pumping fear into us. ...[T]he myth of American exceptional status before God and its divine mission to establish peace and freedom in the world has been instrumental in justification of the American violence around the world and its expansionistic policies. This myth has also made it easier to garner public support as Americans are already predisposed to “sacred” violence and receptive to more of it.

The growing role played by Washington in organizing the arming of elements attacking Syrian government forces is linked to a perspective that “an expanding military confrontation is inevitable”...While formally supporting the cease-fire and political transition plan brokered by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the administration is stoking a violent confrontation with the obvious aim of scuttling this plan and opening the way to more direct military intervention.

“Our policy is to try to accelerate the arrival of that tipping point” at which the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad is toppled, Assistant Secretary of State Jeffrey Feltman explained last March to the US Senate’s foreign relations committee...Thursday saw the latest incarnation of this policy. The devastating car bombs that slaughtered 55 people and left nearly 400 more wounded in Damascus mark a new stage in the criminal imperialist campaign for regime change in Syria.

Senior officers at a top US war college have been instructed to prepare for “total war” against Muslims, including “taking war to a civilian population wherever necessary … the historical precedents of Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki being applicable,” according to leaked documents from course curriculum...“We have now come to understand that there is no such thing as ‘moderate Islam’...This barbaric ideology will no longer be tolerated. Islam must change or we will facilitate its self-destruction.”
