Breaking the Silence: Israeli Soldiers Speak
By Stephen Lendman - April, 26 2008
They're called "Refuseniks" but not for refusing to serve. They've done it proudly and courageously...["]We [Israeli reserve officers & soldiers] shall not continue to fight beyond the 1967 borders to dominate, expel, starve and humiliate an entire people...We hereby declare that we shall continue serving the Israel Defense Forces in any mission that serves Israel's defense...The missions of occupation and oppression do not serve this purpose - and we shall take no part in them."
Canada & the Origins of the Israel-Palestine Conflict (Part 2 of 3)
By Dan Freeman-Maloy - May, 07 2008
When Ben Dunkelman...returned from the European battlefields of WWII...he had already been [asked]...to participate in the looming fight in Palestine. Soon, Dunkelman was juggling management responsibilities at Tip Top Tailors with his tasks as head of the Canadian branch of the Hagana. These included fundraising for weaponry, direct arms procurement, and recruitment for Hagana forces. By the summer of 1948, he was in command of a Brigade actively depopulating Palestinian villages by force - a unit so heavily comprised of recruits from Canada, the United States and South Africa that it came to be known as the "Anglo-Saxon Brigade."

Canada & the Origins of the Israel-Palestine Conflict (Part 1 of 3)
By Dan Freeman-Maloy - May, 06 2008
...Canada is operating in particularly crude alignment with Israel against the Palestinians. Within the framework of the "war on terror," the Canadian government has criminalized nearly all major Palestinian political parties by designating them as "terrorist groups"...even as it cultivates ever more intimate trade, security and diplomatic relations with the Israeli state. On the United Nations Human Rights Council, Canada has emerged as the staunchest opponent of meaningful criticism of Israeli human rights violations and war crimes.
Israel's 60th Anniversary: We Cannot Celebrate
Around the world, plans are being made to mount major celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel. But this year also marks 60 years since 750,000 Palestinians were brutally expelled from their homeland in what they refer to as the Nakba or “catastrophe”. Given this history, and the deepening conflict in the region today, we believe there is no grounds for celebration.

Mayans Fight New Dam in Guatemala
by SchNEWS - Friday 18th April 2008
In the Quiche region of northern Guatemala...lies the isolated Ixcan Municipality. It is home to around 75,000 indigenous Mayans who are mostly subsistence farmers...[T]he area also contains many of Guatemala’s most coveted natural resources...One of these, the Chixoy River, is the controversial proposed location for what would be Guatemala’s largest hydroelectric development. If built, the dam is set to flood an area of 7.5km, displacing at least 3000 people and destroying the agricultural land and livelihoods of around 6-8000...Unsuprisingly, the plan is meeting huge resistance from the Ixcan population.

Squamish band members will likely protest at the 2010 Olympic Games despite the chief signing an agreement with the Vancouver Organizing Committee to support the event...["W]e have 3,500 members and not all want to be part of the Olympics. They want to talk about the children and the hardships in the community and they have the full right to do that."

Tibet and Palestine
By URI AVNERY - Apri1 7, 2008
The world media are shedding tears for the Tibetan people, whose land is taken from them by Chinese settlers. Who cares about the Palestinians, whose land is taken from them by our [Israeli] settlers?...[T]he Israeli spokespersons compare themselves - strange as it sounds - to the poor Tibetans, not to the evil Chinese. Many think this quite logical.
