There will be extra police on the streets this weekend in Caledonia, Ont., where concerns linger about violence erupting between residents and Six Nations protesters who continue to occupy a local housing development on disputed land.
In Lebanon, a little-honored truce remains in effect - yet another in a decades-long series of ceasefires between Israel and its adversaries in a cycle that, as if inevitably, returns to warfare, carnage and human misery. Let's describe the current crisis for what it is: a US-Israeli invasion of Lebanon, with only a cynical pretense to legitimacy. Amid all the charges and counter-charges, the most immediate factor behind the assault is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The nature of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is irreconcilable as long as Israel sees itself as a “Jewish and democratic” state. This is the premise of my book. The Jewish and democratic myth keeps Israelis both from examining the essentially undemocratic nature of their state...and from finding a peaceful solution to their conflict with the Palestinians.
To dismiss me, I will be labelled a Hezbollah supporter, anti-Semitic, or an apologist for terrorism, along with hundreds of thousands of Canadians who grieve and honour all the tragic and preventable deaths by not having our critical faculties distorted by catch phrases and sweeping generalizations.
Disturbing information has come to light. Canada, Ontario and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are coordinating plans for a vigilante-type assault on at least three Indigenous communities, Six Nations, Tyendinaga and Akwesasne. Six Nations/Mohawk people are being targeted for speaking out against Canada’s theft of and encroachment on our land. The Ontario government and the cops are organizing the “brown shirts” (Heil Hitler!). A warning has gone out to Indigenous Warriors to be on the watch for this threatened attack on Labor Day, September 3rd.
With a tenuous cease-fire between Israel and Lebanon holding, the ever-hotter war in Iraq is once again creeping back onto newspaper front pages and towards the top of the evening news. Before being fully immersed in daily reports of bomb blasts, sectarian violence, and casualties, however, it might be worth considering some of the just-under-the-radar-screen realities of the situation in that country.
Art Against Brutality is a daylong multi-media community celebration of resistance, the resilience of the spirit and the healing power of art. The event is organised by an informal grassroots collective, composed of representatives from like-minded groups and individuals.
Our mandate is twofold: to testify to our common struggle and to educate people to the many forms of violence including violence against women, children, racialized communities, drug users and the poor, as well as the degradation of the environment, the systematic violence of capitalism, prison and the welfare system.

Throughout the past week gunmen have opened fire on members of the People’s Assembly of Oaxaca (APPO) killing four and wounding at least 10...Organizations and citizens across Oaxaca formed the APPO shortly after the (state) governor...failed June 14 (on a) raid on a teachers’ encampment in downtown Oaxaca City. The teachers had been camping out, on strike, since May 22...The response of...the state government has been...to arbitrarily and illegally detain APPO leaders, and—apparently—to send thugs and gunmen to terrify and break up the APPO protests.
"...Canadian support for Israel is more unabashed than ever...(I)t is necessary to recognize the further degeneration of Canadian foreign policy into outright support for Israeli aggression, and to pay attention to those who are working to encourage and sustain this shift. These developments represent a very worrying threat, harmful to the people of Palestine and Lebanon, and ominous in terms of the general direction of Canadian foreign policy."
All...notions and prejudices (supporting Zionism), long confounding international action, must now be set aside. The raw logic of Israel's distorted self-image and racist doctrines is expressed beyond confusion by the now-stark reality: the moonscape rubble of once-lovely Lebanese villages; a million desperate people trying to survive Israeli aerial attacks as they carry children and wheel disabled grandparents down cratered roads; the limp bodies of children pulled from the dusty basements of crushed buildings. This is the reality of Israel's national doctrine, the direct outcome of its racist worldview. It is endangering everyone, and it must stop.
(There) is...growing alarm among US commanders at the prospect that Iraq’s majority Shiite population might join the armed insurgency against the US-led occupation forces, which up to now has been based primarily among Iraq’s Sunni Muslims...Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Bashir al Najafi, one of Iraq’s top four Shiite clerics, (said)...the government hasn’t “been able to do anything, just make many promises” and “people are fed up with the promises. One day we will not be able to stop a popular revolution.”

(W)hat has happened to the Israeli army?...This question is now being raised not only around the world, but also in Israel itself. Clearly, there is a huge gap between the (Israeli) army's boastful arrogance, on which generations of Israelis have grown up, and the picture presented by this war...In the test of results...the strategic and tactical command of Hizbullah is decidedly better than that of our own army. All along, our army's strategy has been primitive, brutal and unsophisticated.
