In 1858, the new colony's governor, Sir James Douglas, read the official proclamation that cemented the colony of 'BC'. In 1974 a provincial secretary for 'BC' stated:

"We feel that a holiday should be dedicated to the pioneers who built the colony of British Columbia..."

2008 marks a memorial for Indigenous people in occupied British Columbia: 150 years of colonization, child apprehensions, physical and cultural genocide, land theft and oppression.

With the upcoming 2010 Olympics, this oppression escalates and most of us are feeling the effects.
