This Tuesday the APC will be in Pigeon Park around 10pm serving hot chocolate and occupying the park for a short time to protest the new closure of Pigeon Park at 10pm and the systematic cleansing of that park by the [Vancouver Police Department]. And to remind the city of Vancouver and the VPD that the civil city project in all it's forms amounts to a hate crime against the poor.

For a very long time Peoples' Pigeon Park has been an open community space for people of the downtown eastside. Recently however the VPD and the City of Vancouver have been working hand in hand to socially cleanse the park, under the guise of 'revitalization'. While city workers have been painting over the community art, throwing out peoples' belongings, and hanging signs to remind people that they are not welcome. The VPD have been terrorizing people, as well as handing out tickets to people for just about anything they can.

This 'revitalization' of the park is part of a 'Greenway' that is supposed to extend from Gastown to Chinatown, giving tourists a 'safe path' around the DTES. Currently the Greenway is still under construction and the most important step in it's completion would be removing the 'unsightly' graffiti and poor people from Pigeon Park.

As gentrification towers over the Downtown Eastside from the west in the form of condominiums, the occupants of these condos can peer sadistically at the community below. As an addition to this, the City of Vancouver has decided that part of this revitalization will be to add pictures of people from the community to the 'Pigeon Park Wall', so that yuppies and tourists alike can marvel at the suffering with their morning coffees in hand.

Come help us serve hot chocolate this tuesday at Pigeon Park. Bring blankets, smokes, sweaters, tarps and food if possible.
