[Vancouver] No Time to Celebrate! A Walk for Palestine Commemorating 60 Years of NakbaContributed by blackandred on Fri, 2008-05-09 03:32.
In sections:
2008-05-10 15:00 Canada/Pacific ======================================= Saturday, May 10 Followed by a silent march and rally at Grandview Park This May, celebrations are taking place in Israel and around the world to mark the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel. For Palestinians and for people of conscience worldwide, this birthday is nothing to celebrate. 60 years ago, over 800,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes in the war of 1948, known as al Nakba, the Catastrophe. Today, there are over 6 million Palestinian refugees whose right of return is denied by the apartheid state of Israel. Palestinians living in Israel are subject to systemic discrimination, while the people of Gaza and the West Bank continue to live under an illegal military occupation. In the Gaza Strip, where refugees make up over 70% of the population, a brutal and comprehensive siege by Israel and its allies has prevented the shipment of fuel, medical supplies and food aid, worsening the already harsh conditions. While some choose to celebrate Israel's founding, ignoring historic and present day injustices, we are gathering to demand an end to the ongoing colonization and occupation of Arab lands, an end to the apartheid system in Palestine, full recognition of the fundamental right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as guaranteed under international law and UN Resolution 194, and an end to all forms of Canadian support for Israeli war crimes. The Walk for Palestine is part of Vancouver's Palestine Solidarity Month, and is endorsed by the Boycott Israeli Apartheid Campaign (BIAC), Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR-UBC), Al-Awda Vancouver, Canada-Palestine Support Network, Canadian Arab Federation, Stopwar.ca, International Solidarity Movement - Vancouver, and Jews for a Just Peace, Vancouver & District Labour Council, No One is Illegal - Vancouver, La Surda Latin American COllective, Adala - Canadian Arab Justice Committee, Redwire Native Youth Media, and World Peace Forum.
